The Fruit of Her Desperation” — A Father’s Day Dispatch
Kings of Summer was on FIRE this week!
Before Samuel ever anointed kings or spoke on behalf of God…
He was a gift - The fruit of a woman’s tears, the answer to a powerless, desperate prayer.
Hannah’s gift was Powerlessness
In the ancient world, barrenness wasn’t just a struggle—it was a scarlet letter. She lived under shame, constant teasing, and the quiet judgment of others.
In her world, not having kids wasn’t just hard—it made people look at you like you were broken or cursed.
She couldn’t fix it or hide it, and it was physically impossible to change.
But instead of growing bitter or controlling, Hannah grew faithful.
She poured out her soul at the temple.
She has no fancy words, just raw pain. She didn't show up with Pride, but with nothing left to lose.
And when God answered her—in His timing—she didn’t cling to the gift.
She gave it back.
“For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition… therefore I have lent him to the Lord.”j
—1 Samuel 1:27-28
A Father’s Day Lesson from a Mother’s Prayer
This weekend, many of us will be honored as father, but we are going to learn from this woman how the story begins:
Before fatherhood is power—it is stewardship. Before it’s responsibility—it is a response to grace.
Samuel wasn’t Hannah’s accomplishment. He was God’s fruit, entrusted to her hands.
Brothers - everything we’ve been given is not our accomplishment - it's God's fruit, entrusted to our hands - Your kids, work, wife; your summer, your strength and your joy...
None of it is yours to possess.
All of it is yours to offer back.
When Powerlessness Becomes Fertile Ground
There’s a strange blessing in being brought low.
We feel like we need to fix, hustle, dominate...succeed.
But in God’s kingdom, fruitfulness comes through surrender.
Powerlessness, if met with faith, becomes fertile ground for miracles. And if we refuse that faith? The same powerlessness can rot us from within. I have spent years in both of these scenarios, and thank God, I am sitting with Faith right now.
This weekend, let Hannah reset your summer.
Let her suffering reframe your strength.
And let Samuel—the fruit of her prayer—remind you that what God gives is never for your glory, but for His.
Father’s Day Homework - Share this with your brothers here
• Name one place you feel powerless right now. Write it down. Offer it.
• Pray like Hannah did—honestly and from the gut. God hears.
• Dedicate your children, your job, your weekend to God. Out loud. With humility.
• Ask yourself: Am I clinging to the gift—or giving it back to the Giver?
I'll leave you with this -
You’re not the king. You’re the steward.
But in the hands of the King, even your weakness bears holy fruit.
